Livestock Warning against St Johns Wort Weed

by | Dec 12, 2024 | Agriculture, Community, Environment, Rural | 0 comments

Northern Tablelands Local Land Services have issued a warning against the toxic weed St Johns Wort, a weed that is poisonous to livestock.

Known for its dense clusters of bright yellow flowers, the weed produces toxins called hypericin that can cause reddening and blisters on light coloured and soft skin areas.

The Local Land Services team advise to be on the lookout for Yellow flowers that are 15-25mm wide with 5 petals that flower from spring to autumn, with the petals having small black dots on their edges, leaves are 10-30mm long, green in colour and lighter on the underside, with small translucent oil glands that can be seen when held up to the light, and the leaves appearing as though they have holes in them.

Farmers and Landholders are advised to remove livestock from pastures affected by the weeds immediately and move to a paddock with shade, as animals tend to recover after removal.

More information can be found by contacting the Local Land Services Agronomist, weeds officer or rural store.
