The coalition government has vowed to overturn legislation banning live sheep exports, if re-elected next year.
It comes after a bill banning live sheep exports from 1 May 2028 passed the Senate on Tuesday with the support of the Greens and some crossbenchers, despite a last-minute lobbying attempt from West Australian farmers and exporters to block the proposed legislation.
Advocates of the live export trade who travelled to Canberra have vowed to target the Albanese government in marginal Labor seats across Australia.
Nationals Leader David Littleproud says Labor has once again treated farmers with contempt by ignoring farmers pleas to save the live sheep exports, adding the decision is simply Labor bowing down to animal activists, even though Australia has the world’s best animal welfare standards.
