New England MP Barnaby Joyce has had an intense confrontation with the ABC’s 7:30 Report host Sarah Ferguson following questions about how One Nation’s plan to let Australians use their super to pay bills would affect their retirement savings.
ONE Nation leader Pauline Hanson unveiled a plan where eligible Australians would be able to access 3% of mandatory 12 % super contributions for up to three years, which would allow them to make their rent and mortgage repayments.
Mr Joyce was asked if he had “put together figures on the loss to people’s retirement savings over time if they were to use this facility”, but dismissed the question, saying it was like asking “how long is a piece of string”.
Ms Ferguson gave several examples of people on the average wage and questioned Mr Joyce about how much they would lose on retirement under the One Nation proposal, to which Mr Joyce could not comment on the figures, saying he wasn’t given the figures prior to the interview to provide answers
