Glen Innes Moves to Level 3 Water Restrictions as Demand Remains High

by | May 1, 2026 | Local Government, Media Release

Glen Innes Severn Council has implemented Level 3 Water Restrictions in Glen Innes, following a further decline in water levels at the Beardy Weir and sustained high water demand across the community.

Recent inspections show the Beardy Weir is now 1,000 millimetres below full supply level, activating Level 3 restrictions under Council’s Drought Management Plan. The restrictions are now in effect across Glen Innes.

General Manager Bernard Smith said the move reflects current conditions and the need to take early action to manage the town’s water supply.

“While many people are already making an effort to use water wisely, demand in Glen Innes is still higher than recommended for dry conditions,” Mr Smith said.
“Level 3 restrictions are about protecting our water supply and giving us the best chance to manage through the coming months.”
Under Level 3 restrictions, tighter limits apply to non-essential water use, including garden watering, vehicle washing and swimming pool filling.

Key requirements include:

  • Garden watering by bucket only, up to two hours per day
  • A limit of 2,000 litres for private swimming pool filling
  • Washing of paved areas, roofs and vehicles by bucket only
  • Use of recycled or reused water only on public gardens and sports grounds
  • Bowling greens watered by hand-held hose only, for up to two hours per day

Mr Smith said average water use in Glen Innes is currently around 250 litres per person per day, compared with a Level 3 target of 160–180 litres.

“Reducing everyday water use, indoors as well as outdoors, will make a real difference. Small changes across the whole community add up quickly,” he said.

Deepwater Moves to Level 2 Water Restrictions

Water levels at the Deepwater Weir have also declined, with Deepwater moving to Level 2 Water Restrictions from the same date.

Restriction levels vary by town and are based on local water supply conditions. Council will continue to monitor water levels closely and provide updates if conditions change.

Planning for the Future

Mayor Margot Davis said that the Integrated Water Cycle Management Plan currently being prepared for Council is undertaking a strategic and comprehensive review of Council’s water cycle, including water supply and sewerage.

“Whilst we cannot prevent dry periods, this plan will ensure we continue to be well positioned and have the infrastructure in place to manage this valuable resource in an optimum way. We expect it to be completed by the end of the year,” Cr Davis said.
