Inverell Shire Council Endorses Submission to 2026 Murray–Darling Basin Plan Review

by | May 1, 2026 | Local Government, Media Release

Inverell Shire Council has formally endorsed its submission to the Murray–Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) as part of the 2026 Murray–Darling Basin Plan Review, ensuring the priorities and concerns of the Inverell community are clearly represented in this national process.

The submission follows extensive participation by Council in regional briefings, forums and stakeholder meetings since February 2026, including sessions facilitated by the Murray Darling Association, Gunnedah Shire Council, the NSW Water Directorate, and the Gwydir Valley Irrigators Association.

These engagements provided valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities facing Basin communities.

Council’s submission highlights several key themes critical to the Inverell Shire, including community stability, economic resilience, water supply reliability, infrastructure investment, sustainable diversion limits, groundwater considerations, environmental outcomes, and the importance of First Nations participation.

Deputy Mayor Cr Jo Williams said Council’s involvement in the review reflects its commitment to safeguarding the region’s long‑term water security and community wellbeing.

“Water underpins every aspect of life in our region, from agriculture and industry to the liveability of our towns and villages. Our submission ensures the voices of Inverell Shire residents are heard as part of this major national review. Council will continue advocating for fair, practical and sustainable outcomes that support our communities now and into the future.”

The 2026 Basin Plan Review is currently in the public consultation phase, with submissions closing on 1 May 2026.

The MDBA will analyse feedback and prepare recommendations for the Australian Government later this year.

Council’s submission emphasises the need for balanced policy settings that recognise the unique circumstances of northern Basin communities and the importance of maintaining reliable water access to support local economies, environmental health and future growth.
The endorsed submission will be forwarded to the Murray–Darling Basin Authority.
