Preparing for the Renewable Energy Boom

by | Mar 17, 2026 | Environment, Local Government, Media Release

Uralla Shire Council has released its first comprehensive update on the region’s growing role in the New England Renewable Energy Zone (REZ), based on 18 months of planning and community engagement.

With several major wind and transmission projects underway, Uralla is expected to host the largest share of temporary workers across the REZ, bringing both opportunities and challenges.

The Council has been proactively coordinating heavy vehicle routes, reviewing project proposals, planning for workforce accommodation, and advocating for upgrades to local water, waste, and transport infrastructure.

Regional studies released late last year confirmed constraints in water supply and waste capacity, and the Council is already securing funding for feasibility investigations and long‑term planning.

It is also working in close collaboration with EnergyCo, NSW planning authorities, neighbouring councils, and biodiversity and regional leadership groups.

Community feedback is also shaping the Council’s approach, with more than 150 residents sharing their views on the energy transition. Common themes include improved infrastructure, diverse housing, training opportunities, and the importance of protecting Uralla’s identity and cohesion.

Looking ahead, the Council is focused on managing overlapping construction timelines, housing pressures, and infrastructure readiness. Potential opportunities include sustainable initiatives, new research partnerships, and opening up serviced land.

As the REZ shifts from planning to delivery, the Council will continue to monitor emerging risks, advocate for the community, and provide quarterly updates to keep residents informed.
