Member for Northern Tablelands Brendan Moylan has met with and congratulated local students and University of New England (UNE) staff during visits to Gravesend, Moree and Pallamallawa today, highlighting UNE’s leadership in training and retaining the region’s future doctors.
Students in the Regional Health Professional Pathway (RHPP) and Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship (LIC) programs met with Mr Moylan during a visit organised by UNE, showcasing how locally embedded health professionals are stepping up to help address the region’s chronic doctor shortage.
The RHPP enables local nurses, paramedics, allied health staff and Aboriginal health workers to undertake a medical degree, while remaining in their local communities. The LIC places medical students in rural practices for extended, community based training, building real relationships with local communities, patients and local clinicians. Together, these programs create a pipeline of local students, local training and local doctors which is a proven way to grow our own medical workforce.
UNE is leading the way nationally in rural medical education. Its commitment to community based training, innovation and genuine partnership with regional health services is setting the benchmark for how regional Australia can grow and keep its own doctors. UNE isn’t just contributing to the solution, it is driving it, and the Northern Tablelands is benefiting directly from its leadership.
“These students are already working in our local communities, caring for local families and building the skills and experience that will keep them here long term,” Mr Moylan said. “Growing our own doctors must be part of the solution. Programs like the RHPP and LIC are proving that regional students, regional training and regional placements will ultimately deliver regional doctors.”
