Highlanders Women’s Team Challenge for Grand Final Berth

by | Aug 21, 2026 | Sport

The Inverell Highlanders still have an interest in the Central North Rugby Finals series with their Women’s team playing off for a grand final berth against Pirates in Moree tomorrow.

The Highlanders claimed a preliminary final spot after they downed Moree in the Minor semi a fortnight ago and have started to build confidence in their structure, discipline and skills over the past month.

Highlanders Women’s Coach Ashleigh Makim says they have fought hard all season to earn their place in the Central North Rugby Union Women’s Preliminary Final, heading into this weekend as the underdogs against the Tamworth Pirates in Moree.

Makim says over the past four rounds, the team has shown just how far they have come, building confidence through hard work on our structure, discipline and technical skills to reach the level of rugby, knowing they’re capable of playing adding if they stick to their strengths, trust their systems and play for each other, these ladies can achieve the result they have worked so hard for.

She says keep an eye out for their attacking weapons, Kimmy O’Donnell and Alice Gleeson, who will be key in creating opportunities, while their ruthless defenders, Kusitina Matawala and Tilly Thompson, will be looking to make their presence felt.

Makim says it’s all on the line this weekend, and the Highlanders are ready to fight for every minute!

In other games – the 1st grade clash sees Moree host the Narrabri Blue Boars for the right to play Quirindi in the Grand final while Moree plays Quirindi in Reserve grade.
