Inverell Shire Council has received a report on the outcomes of its 2024/2025 Heavy Patching Program, which delivered pavement repairs across priority sections of the local and regional road network.
The program was endorsed by Council in March 2025 and focused on addressing significant pavement failures, improving road safety, strengthening road surfaces and preparing sections for future resealing works.
Heavy patching involves milling the existing road pavement, strengthening the pavement with stabilising additives and/or additional material, and reshaping the road surface to improve ride quality and extend the life of the asset.
Mayor of Inverell Shire, Cr Kate Dight, said “Council’s road network is one of our most important community assets and heavy patching is an important part of addressing priority pavement failures and improving safety for road users.”
Works were undertaken on road segments including Warialda Road, Bonshaw Road, Bruxner Way, Old Texas Road, Copeton Dam Road, Kings Plains Road, Old Stannifer Road, Bundarra Road, Guyra Road, Ashford Road, Yetman Road and Bingara Road.
The program delivered 50,862.9 square metres of heavy patching, exceeding the originally estimated area of 48,263.7 square metres.
The total cost was $1,753,542, representing a minor shortfall of $8,230 to be covered through operational savings across Council’s capital works program.
Across the program, Council achieved a unit rate of $34.48 per square metre, significantly lower than rates previously paid to external contractors for similar works. Council will continue to monitor these costs to ensure best value for money in future road maintenance and renewal programs.
