Saints Book Spot in Grand Final After Last Gasp Win

by | Aug 31, 2026 | Sport

A goal in the last 20 seconds of Saturday’s AFL Northwest Major Semi final at Varley Oval has given the Inverell Saints a 3-point win over the Tamworth Swans and hosting rights for this year’s Grand Final in a fortnight.

A quick snap at goal by captain Ryan Lewis stole victory for the Swans to give the Saints a 12.14.86 to 12.11.83 win, highlighted by 7 goals by key forward Angus Croft.

Saints Men’s Coach Hayden Chappel says the Swan’s conversion at goal cost them dearly and they were able to scrap out the last goal.

Chappl admits there’s a lot of room for improvement if they’re going to be a chance of the winning the premiership.

Meantime the Inverell Saints Women will have to do it the hard way after going down to the Gunnedah Poochettes 6.4.40 to 4.0.24.

The Poochettes looked far more skilled and quick across the field but when full back Chloe Taveira booted two quick goals in the last term, it gave the Saints some hope, but time run out for the home side.

Saints Women’s coach Chris Pay says his team looked rusty after not playing too many games in the last half of the season but hopes they’ll be able to build match fitness against the Swans this weekend in Tamworth and have another shot at the Poochettes in a fortnight’s time.
