Northern Tablelands MP Brendan Moylan was left disappointed after the NSW Government voted against the Opposition’s Crime Bill which he believes would have made communities in his electorate safer.
The bill included tougher measures including expanding the definition of repeat offences beyond serious break and enter and motor vehicle theft, to include all serious indictable offences like murder or sexual assault, introducing electronic monitoring and a mandatory curfew as conditions of bail, revoking bail if there is a breach of the bail conditions, if another charge is laid while on bail, or if there is any interference with the electronic monitoring device, and elevating the voice of victims in the court through the use of victim impact statements.
Mr Moylan says the government is playing politics with this issue and was hoping for bipartisan support but that never eventuated during the September sittings of parliament
He says with the recent stabbing incidents in Moree and in Grafton last week, this should’ve sent a clear message to the parliament that there is a serious problem with youth crime in Regional NSW.
