The $5.6 million Bald Nob Road upgrade between the New England and Gwydir Highways has reached practical completion, delivering a safer and smoother journey for local residents, visitors and heavy vehicle operators.
The extensive 6-kilometre upgrade, jointly funded by the Australian Government and Glen Innes Severn Council, included critical road realignment, widening and pavement rehabilitation to address its deteriorated state and meet modern safety standards. The Australian Government contributed $4.48 million, with Council providing the remaining funding.
Glen Innes Severn Council Mayor Margot Davis said, “This project marks a major milestone for our region, greatly improving the safety, efficiency and overall driving experience on Bald Nob Road.”
“Local infrastructure projects like this one not only enhance community safety but also provide vital links for freight vehicles. This upgraded route offers a 36-kilometre shortcut between Brisbane and Grafton, significantly benefiting transport efficiency,” said Cr Davis.
Key project highlights include:
- Moving 30,000 cubic metres of earth to realign and widen the road.
- Installing 17,000 tonnes of gravel base sourced from Council quarries.
- Spraying 90,000 litres of bitumen and applying 800 tonnes of aggregate for the final seal.
Completed over the course of 18 months, the Bald Nob Road project stands as one of the largest infrastructure projects Council has delivered in recent years. Council thanks the community and motorists for their cooperation and support while these essential works were being carried out.
