Things got heated on the floor of State Parliament on Thursday when the Time For Change e-petition, which gathered over 22,000 signatures, was debated.
Several Nationals MP, including Northern Tablelands MP Brendan Moylan, called on the State government to change the young offenders Act to address the escalating rise in rural and regional crime.
During the debate, Attorney General Michael Daley says the government is addressing the four points of the e-petition including strengthening bail laws to prevent violent young offenders from re-offending, provide increased resources and support for police officers to effectively apprehend and prosecute offenders, and review the judicial system to prioritise community safety.
Mr Daley asked parliament members to be intelligent, factual and not use political rhetoric to these sorts of debates calling on members to ‘watch their words’ in relation to the issue to which Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson took exception to and called for the government to make the changes now.
