The New England Police District recorded the highest rate of fatalities in the state last year.
Traffic & Highway Peel Sector Manager inspector Kelly Wixx says the biggest factors causing serious road crashes and fatalities are alcohol, drugs, driver negligence and fatigue alongside the lack of people using seatbelts.
Inspector Wixx says 36 people lost their lives in the New England and Oxley Police District, eight more than in 2023, with Inverell Shire registering four deaths in 2024 and Glen Innes Severn Shire two fatalities while Gwydir and Uralla Shire’s did not register a fatality.
She says the loss of lives on our regions roads is avoidable and called on motorists to be responsible behind the wheel
