Racial Discrimination Complaint Against Aquatic Centre Accepted

by | Apr 28, 2026 | Community

A racial discrimination complaint against Inverell Aquatic Centre has been accepted by the Australian Human Rights Commission relating to an incident in March last year.

The complaint, which names NSW Police and Belgravia Leisure, is on behalf of families who say they were at the public pool with children, parents, carers and an Elder when staff called police, alleging some children were not following rules.

In an item in First Nations News, the families allege the actions of pool staff and police breached federal racial discrimination laws, while seeking systemic change to prevent similar incidents.

The Human Rights Commission’s acceptance of the complaint does not determine the outcome, but it moves the dispute into a formal conciliation process with National Justice Project solicitor Lucy Schroeder saying this news was “an important step toward accountability”, arguing that the case raises broader questions about how public facilities and policing interact with First Nations families.

STA FM contact the Australian Human Rights Commission for comment but stated they do not comment on or release information about individual complaints adding complaints to the Commission are confidential to protect the privacy of all parties involved, and all Commission staff are required to comply with strict non-disclosure obligations.
