Moree Plains Shire Council Faces Suspension

by | Oct 27, 2026 | Local Government

Local Government Minister Ron Hoenig is considering stepping in to resolve serious concerns regarding the conduct of council meetings at Moree Plains Shire Council.

The Northern Daily Leader reports the Council is facing possible suspension after several incidents in the Council Chambers, including the censuring of Cr Kelly James in July and her expulsion from the chambers at the recent Council meeting.

Council has received correspondence from the Minister advising that he is considering exercising his powers to temporarily suspend the council for three months due to serious concerns regarding the conduct of council meetings, the repeated involvement of NSW Police in maintaining order, and the apparent deterioration in the working relationships between councillors.

An Extraordinary meeting of the council has been called by Mayor Susannah Pearse and Cr Fred McGrady at 12pm on Monday 2 November to consider and endorse a formal submission and response from the council.

The Minster will consider submissions from the council to be received by 6 November 2026 before determining whether to proceed with the proposed suspension.
