The Inverell Jockey Club have made the tough decision to cancel their annual Boxing Day Race meeting, citing a drop in attendance in recent years and costs of running the day.
Jockey Club President Sean Baldwin says the decision, which officially was made on Friday, is sure to upset local people and traditionalists but admits the race day had declined in recent years adding recent statistics showed horse numbers had fallen over the past 6 years and jockeys were scarce on Boxing Day.
Mr Baldwin says at its peak, the meeting was a great day to catch up with old friends, but those days are now long gone
He confirmed with the demise of the Boxing day meeting, the Club has gained a TAB meeting on Saturday February 13th, 2027, to coincide with the Jammin at the Green event at Inverell Sporties.
