A grass fire at Bukkulla was raised to a Watch and Act level yesterday afternoon with residents put on high alert.
Thought to have been sparked by a lightning strike yesterday morning, the fire burning in the vicinity of the Ashford Rd, was travelling in a south westerly direction towards the MacIntyre River.
Firefighters, assisted by aircraft, gained the upper hand during the afternoon and slowed the spread of this fire with crews continuing to work to strengthen containment lines.
Meantime, a Total Fire ban has been issued for the Northern Slopes area, which includes Inverell Shire with hot and dry conditions forecast across parts of the state, increasing the fire danger.
