Drivers Urged to Take Extra Care on Unsealed Roads

by | Jun 9, 2026 | Local Government, Media Release, Transport

Uralla Shire Council is asking residents and visitors to take extra care when travelling on unsealed roads, as temporary changes to road maintenance remain in place due to dry conditions across the Shire.

While recent rainfall has been welcomed, Council will continue to closely monitor weather patterns and water availability to ensure essential road works do not place additional pressure on our precious drinking water.

Water plays a critical role in maintaining unsealed roads. It is needed to properly compact gravel surfaces and, without it, grading can provide only a short-term improvement that may ultimately impact the long-term condition of the road.

Roadside vegetation management has also been adjusted, with slashing activities paused due to the heightened fire risk associated with dry conditions.

In the meantime, Council crews are focusing on alternative works that do not rely on water. These include drainage improvements and targeted heavy patching, particularly along key routes such as Thunderbolts Way.
