Overconfidence and distractions are believed to be the key causes for the 18 fatal crashes that have occurred in the Oxley and New England Police District this year according to Peel Highway Patrol manager, Inspector Kelly Wixx.
In an item in the Northern daily Leader, Inspector Wixx says a vehicle is a weapon and when people are complacent with what they are doing – it can lead to tragic and horrible consequences adding drivers need to take their driving behaviours more seriously.
She says it’s continually upsetting and extremely frustrating that a lot of the fatalities that are occurring on the roads occur because of driver inattention whether through negligence, poor choices, or sheer overestimation of skill.
Inspector Wixx says the hardest part of the job is informing a family of an accident that has claimed the life of a loved one which she stresses is horrendous.
