Council to Object Proposed Dam Levy

by | Nov 8, 2024 | Local Government | 0 comments

Inverell Shire Council will object a NSW Government proposed dam safety levy on declared dams.

Earlier this year, a report was  placed  before  Council  regarding  the  NSW Government’s  decision  to  introduce  a  dams  safety  levy  under  the Dams  Safety  Act 2015.

Under IPART’s design, an owner of a ‘low’ consequence dam would be levied $7,639 per year; a ‘significant’ consequence dam $10,574; a ‘high’ consequence dam $12,613; and an ‘extreme’ consequence dam $15,264.

Mayor Kate Dight says the only dam that Council owns that this proposed legislation will affect is Lake Inverell.

She says this new proposed levy is just another case of cost shifting from the NSW government to local councils adding the government should be responsible for the fee.
