Inverell Shire Council is preparing a submission to the Draft New England Northwest Strategic Regional Integrated Transport.
The Draft Plan has been released by Transport for NSW (TfNSW) for community and stakeholder feedback and is intended to guide transport infrastructure, service planning and policy development across the region over the next 20 years.
Council has previously advocated for stronger recognition of Inverell’s role as a major regional service centre and freight hub, with particular emphasis on the importance of the Gwydir Highway and associated freight routes, improved public and community transport, active transport infrastructure, safer pedestrian access and recognition of Inverell Airport as strategically important regional infrastructure.
Council’s draft submission acknowledges the positive strategic direction of the Draft Plan, including its focus on freight resilience, accessibility and active transport.
However, it also raises concerns about the lack of clear delivery mechanisms, funding certainty and route-specific infrastructure commitments relevant to the Inverell Local Government Area.
The submission will also note the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Inland Rail and the potential for continued pressure on regional and local road networks if freight remains heavily road dependent.
Mayor Cr Kate Dight said it was important that Inverell Shires needs were clearly reflected in the final regional transport plan.
“Transport planning decisions made now will help shape the future of our communities, industries and local economy for many years to come,” Mayor Dight said.
“Council wants to ensure the final plan properly recognises Inverell as a key regional service centre and freight hub, and that it includes practical commitments around road safety, freight efficiency, public transport access, active transport and investment in the infrastructure our communities rely on every day.”
Submissions on the Draft New England North West Strategic Regional Integrated Transport Plan close on Sunday 14 June 2026.
