Bats Return to Inverell

by | Jun 2, 2025 | Community, Environment, Local Government | 0 comments

The return of bats in Inverell has received mixed reactions throughout the community.

Bats are protected in Australia due to their critical ecological roles, legal protections under wildlife laws, and the need to conserve biodiversity but residents are warned they can also infect people with the deadly lyssavirus if scratched or bitten by a bat.

Inverell Shire Mayor Kate Dight says it’s such a difficult problem stressing Council are unable to do anything about the bats due to various environmental constraints.

Mayor Dight says Council can contact various environmental groups but states not much can be done.
