Amnesty International Calls for Investigation into Pool Incident

by | Mar 19, 2025 | Community | 0 comments

Amnesty International has weighed into the incident at Inverell Aquatic centre on Sunday after reports that all Aboriginal children were removed from the facility by NSW police in response to a few children misbehaving.

The Human Rights organisation says in a statement the targeting of children based on their race, and the association of these children to the behaviour of other children who may belong to the same racial group, is outright discrimination.

The organisation is calling on the Minns government to investigate what happened at the Inverell Aquatic Centre, and if it is confirmed that the NSW police and pool staff employed by the council engaged in racial discrimination, they must be held accountable.

Centre managers Belgravia Leisure says they’re committed to fostering a safe and welcoming environment for all and have a zero-tolerance policy for anti-social, discriminatory, or abusive behaviour adding their commitment to inclusivity is demonstrated through their support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities nationwide via various initiatives, programs and services.

They state as outlined in their Equal Opportunity, Diversity, Anti-Discrimination, Harassment, and Bullying Policy, Belgravia Leisure is committed to maintaining workplaces and sites free from all forms of discrimination and will not tolerate any behaviour that compromises the safety and well-being of their team members or guests.
