The big four banks have agreed to ensure no regional bank branches will close before July 2027.
The Commonwealth Bank, ANZ, National Australia and Westpac have agreed to a federal government moratorium to cease further closures over the next two years.
Federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers says for a strong national economy, regional Australia needs to be a big part of the story, and that means making sure that banking services are available to the people, workers, businesses and communities of regional Australia.
Mr Chalmers says the government also wanted to ensure that there are still face-to-face services for people who need them in the bush for whom digital alternatives may not necessarily work.
The government has also signed an agreement with the major banks to increase their service commitments at Australia Post outlets, also called Bank@Post.
