New England MP Barnaby Joyce has apologised for likening ballot papers to “bullets” during a protest against wind turbines.
Speaking in Lake Illawarra on Sunday, Mr Joyce compared ballot papers to bullets and urged the crowd to “load that magazine” at the voting booth against prime minister Anthony Albanese and energy minister Chris Bowen.
Mr Joyce says the ballot paper is the weapon for a voter adding it shouldn’t be a bullet, it should be a ballot paper and the ballot box that people should be using to protest against renewable projects.
In response, Mr Albanese called for Mr Joyce to be sacked from the shadow ministry over the comment adding this should be a test for opposition leader Peter Dutton.
Mr Joyce apologised for the comments when he appeared on television Monday morning.
