New Apprentices, Trainees & Cadets on the Way for Local Councils

by | Nov 4, 2026 | Local Government, Media Release

Member for Northern Tablelands Brendan Moylan with Armidale Regional Council Mayor Sam Coupland.

Several Northern Tablelands councils are bolstering their workforce, sharing in $2,845,582 in funding for apprentices, trainees and cadetships.

Member for Northern Tablelands Brendan Moylan said he was thrilled Gwydir, Armidale, Glen Innes Severn, Inverell and Uralla Councils received funding through the New South Wales Government’s Fresh Start Grant Program- Round 3.

“It’s no secret there are gaps in the local skilled workforce, and our local councils are no exception,” Mr Moylan said.

“It opens the door for locals to take up new roles in their local council, and build a prosperous and rewarding career.

“Young people are especially encouraged to apply to learn new skills and bring fresh ideas to the councils.”

Gwydir Shire Council has been approved for $1,089,601 for its ‘Career Start Program’.

It will allow local students and job seekers to gain valuable skills and experience in local government while studying to obtain a nationally recognised qualification.

Armidale Regional Council has received $781,152 for ‘Pathways to Employment’.

The council looks to address skills gaps and an ageing workforce with a range of traineeships, cadetships and apprenticeships.

Glen Innes Severn Council has locked in $374,516 to provide employment and training for young people, part of its Workforce Management Strategy.

$361,643 is headed to Inverell Shire Council to fund plant operator apprenticeships.

The council relies on skilled plant operators, and there’s a critical need to develop skilled workers to keep up the standard of service.

Uralla Shire Council has received $238, 670 for its apprenticeship program.

This will create training pathways into high need areas of the council’s operations.

“I encourage all residents regardless of experience and backgrounds to apply,” Mr Moylan said.
