Uralla Shire Council is inviting community feedback on a proposal to rename Pioneer Park as “Fibonacci Park”, reflecting the park’s distinctive identity created through its major redevelopment completed in 2024.
Council has endorsed in principle the proposed name change and commencing a formal community consultation process, including exhibition of the proposal and liaison with the NSW Geographical Names Board.
The proposal follows the significant upgrade of the park funded through the NSW Government’s Public Spaces Legacy Program. During the redevelopment planning process, the community selected a Fibonacci-themed design concept through public consultation and exhibition. The completed park incorporates Fibonacci proportions, Golden Ratio design principles, educational elements and distinctive landscaping features that have become the defining character of the space.
Mayor Robert Bell said the proposed name would better reflect the park’s unique identity and the vision embraced by the community.
“The redevelopment transformed this space into something truly distinctive. The Fibonacci theme is woven throughout the design of the park and has become its defining feature,” Mayor Bell said.
“While the name Pioneer Park has served the community well for many years, the park today is very different from what it once was. Renaming it Fibonacci Park would better reflect what visitors and residents experience when they visit the site.”
Mayor Bell said the proposal also recognised the important role the community played in shaping the park’s future.
“This wasn’t a theme selected behind closed doors. The Fibonacci concept emerged through a community consultation and public exhibition process, and the final design was delivered based on that feedback.
“This proposal acknowledges that contribution and ensures the park’s official name aligns with the vision that the community supported.”
Council believes the proposed name would strengthen Uralla’s identity as a destination and support future tourism, education and place-making opportunities. The distinctive name would also help differentiate the park from similarly named facilities elsewhere in Australia.
Mayor Bell said the consultation process would provide the community with another opportunity to have its say.
“We want to hear from our community before any final decision is made. The exhibition period will give residents the chance to provide feedback and help shape the future identity of this important community space.”
The proposed name change will be publicly exhibited for 28 days, with submissions invited from the community on Council’s Your Say Uralla! page: Proposed renaming of Pioneer Park | Your Say Uralla Shire
A further report will then be presented to Council, together with advice from the NSW Geographical Names Board, before any final decision is considered.
