Armidale Regional Council has introduced level 1 water restrictions in response to ongoing hot temperatures and minimal rainfall across the region.
Under level 1 water restrictions, the average recommended water consumption is 180 litres per person per day to help protect water supplies during dry periods.
Rainwater and greywater can be used at any time, provided rainwater tanks are not topped up from the town water supply, and lawns and gardens may be watered using sprinklers during approved watering times and for no more than two hours.
The Northern Daily Leader reports Level 1 water restrictions will in place until the total water storage returns to 95 % and once this is reached, restrictions can be released.
Mayor Sam Coupland is encouraging everyone to cut back now so they can protect their water supply and avoid tougher restrictions later.
