Uralla Tip Secures $195K Grant for Safety and Efficiency Upgrades

by | Oct 9, 2025 | Environment, Local Government, Media Release | 0 comments

Uralla Shire Council has received $195,785 in funding through Round 5 of the Landfill Consolidation and Environmental Improvements Program, a NSW Government initiative aimed at improving waste infrastructure across regional communities.

The grant will support a significant upgrade to the Uralla waste management facility, with a focus on improving public safety, reducing contamination, and ensuring more accurate charging for incoming waste loads.

“This funding allows us to make real improvements to how we manage waste locally,” said Anja Kermode, Team Leader Waste Operations. “We’ll be changing to a different transfer skip bin system that restricts public access into a safer area separate from where our mobile plant and trucks operate. This means we can supervise customers more effectively and reduce the risk of accidents.”

The upgrade will also help tackle contamination in waste streams, a growing issue for councils trying to meet environmental targets and reduce landfill impact.

“We want to reduce contamination and charge incoming loads accurately,” Ms Kermode added. “This new setup will help us do both, while also improving the experience for residents who use the facility.”

The Landfill Consolidation and Environmental Improvements Program is jointly delivered by the NSW Environmental Trust and the NSW Environment Protection Authority under the Waste Less, Recycle More strategy. It provides grants of up to $200,000 to regional councils outside the Metropolitan Levy zone, covering up to 70% of project costs.

“The total project cost is estimated to be $279,692 with 30% Council co-contribution consisting of about $22,350 in cash and $61,557 in kind” revealed by Dr Isaac Arah, Manager for Environment and Waste.

Uralla Shire Council’s successful application reflects its commitment to responsible waste management and community safety. The upgraded facility is expected to be operational in the coming months, with minimal disruption to current services during the transition.

“This is a great outcome for Uralla,” Ms Kermode said. “It’s about making our services safer, smarter, and more sustainable for everyone.”
