Ashford’s aged care provider, Sunhaven Hostel is celebrating this morning after being one of just 5 facilities in New South Wales to receive funding under the Australian Government’s Aged Care Capital Assistance program.
The $1.1 million grant, which has been welcomed by Sunhaven, will enable them to build accommodation for aged care staff to overcome the housing shortage in Ashford.
Project Manager Christy Galbraith from Ladybug Projects says Sunhaven has Registered Nurses and Care Support Workers who commute between 120 -150 kilometres each work day due to lack of accommodation options in Ashford, adding the absence of housing in Ashford has also led to difficulty attracting and retaining aged care staff at Sunhaven’s 18 bed facility.
The project was widely supported by Ashford’s General Practitioner, Dr Abbas, the Ashford Business Council, Aboriginal Land Council and the broader community, who see the project as vital for meeting the needs of Ashford’s growing seniors population.
