Strong Community Support for Tingha Playground and Amenities Upgrade

by | Sep 30, 2025 | Community, Local Government, Media Release | 0 comments

Inverell Shire Council has received strong support from the Tingha community for its proposed upgrades to local playgrounds and public amenities, following an extensive consultation process completed earlier this year.

A concept plan has been developed in response to community demand, focusing on staged improvements to playground and recreation facilities in Tingha.

Key elements include:

  • Upgrading the New Valley Road playground, opposite the Tingha Sport and Recreation Club, with new public toilets, modern play equipment for a range of age groups, and enhanced sports infrastructure.
  • Repurposing Grahame Park into a passive recreation space, with BBQ, seating and shade facilities retained, but removing playground equipment due to flood risks and traffic concerns.
  • Refurbishing the public amenities building in Ruby Street, adjacent to the Town Hall and opposite the Royal Hotel.
Community consultation took place in June and July 2025 through Council’s website, social media, local radio, and public displays at the Red Rose Café and Council’s Administration Centre.

A survey of 79 participants showed: 91% supported the proposed playground layout, 78% supported repurposing Grahame Park.

Mayor Cr Kate Dight said the results show a clear community mandate for the project.

“The Tingha community has been very engaged in shaping this concept plan, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. These upgrades will create a safer, more modern and inclusive recreational space for families and young people, while preserving Grahame Park as a valuable passive green area”.

Council will now progress to detailed design work for key infrastructure elements including toilets, car parking, shared pathways and lighting.

A funding strategy will be developed, focussing on applications to State and Federal Government grant programs.

In the meantime, Council will deliver low-cost improvements as soon as resources permit. These include installing a multi-sport goal post at the New Valley Road playground, upgrading footpaths to improve accessibility, and exploring the relocation of some playground equipment from Grahame Park.
