For the first time in over 40 years, snow has fallen in Inverell, Gilgai and Tingha after the Northern Tablelands was turned into a winter wonderland on Saturday.
Inverell SES Flood Intelligence officer David Jones says the last time snow was reported in Inverell and Tingha was July 4th 1984 but also believes their were reports of snow falling around the Tingha area in 2012.
Mr Jones also received information from a man aged in his 90’s who lives in Armidale that it was the biggest drop of snow he’s seen in Armidale.
Glen Innes, Guyra, Uralla and Armidale were heavily impacted by the snow with icy and snowy road conditions along the New England Highway, forcing the highway to be closed in both directions between Glen Innes and Moonbi.
Large trees were also reported to have come down around the region with these trees were likely going to take a while to clear, given the conditions – which could lead to further delays.
Homes and businesses were also impacted by the severe weather system with power outages reported in Uralla, Guyra and Armidale with parts of the network frozen, preventing restoration.
