Severe Weather Predicted for Region

by | Oct 9, 2024 | Weather | 0 comments

The recent bout of warm weather is expected to take a backseat for the remainder of this week with heavy thunderstorms predicted to break out into the region from as early as today.

Meteorologist Joel Pippard reports that a classic mixture of heat drifting in from the north and west, as well as cold air pushing up from the south will collide with moisture from the east to create the perfect conditions for thunderstorms.

He says the thunderstorms are expected to be more isolated tomorrow, but some isolated heavy rain is possible with the Northern Tablelands predicted to receive over 20mm of rain within the next 24 hours, bringing with it a chance of flash flooding in some areas.

Mr Pippard says as well as the heavy rainfall, the thunderstorm outbreak may also be accompanied by large hail and damaging winds with the severe weather briefly subsiding by Friday before returning to stormy conditions over the weekend.

Residents are urged to take necessary precautions by securing loose items as well as monitor conditions by using the Hazards Near Me app.
