A nine-goal opening burst by the Inverell Saints has set up a big win 61 point over the Tamworth Kangaroos at Varley Oval on Saturday in round 8 results in the AFL Northwest competition.
Forwards Angus Croft, Brady Mather and captain Ryan Lewis had a day out scoring multiple goals in the 23.12.150 to 13.11.89 victory with Men’s Coach Hayden Chappel highlighting the performance of ruckman Dylan Hogg and defender Ben Myler playing his 50th game for the club.
Chappel was happy with the win but admitted match fitness took its toll on his players in the last term after not playing games for a fortnight.
The Saints Women had to come from behind in the last quarter to defeat a determined Kangaroos outfit by 16 points.
Four goals to Carissa Baldwin and 3 from Katrina Doak aided in the 8.6.54 to 5.8.38 win.
In the games played in Tamworth, the Gunnedah Bulldogs had a commanding win over reigning premiers Tamworth Swans scoring an 18.10.118 to 11.3.69 victory while in the women’s game, the Swans defeated the Poochettes in a thriller by 1 point, winning 7.6.48 to 7.5.47.
