Regional Airline REX has come under fire by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese after the airline went into an unexpected trading halt on Monday.
Mr Albanese expressed concern that REX had moved away from regional services to focus on flights from Sydney to Melbourne, despite the airline denying such actions earlier this year when flights were being withdrawn from Armidale as well as other regional terminals.
The Prime Minister’s comments came amid calls for his government to act as REX’s future now hangs in the balance, with Transport Minister Catherine King saying the government will look at options to aid the airline once more information is available, given its vital importance in regional communities.
REX has put through a request to the Australian Stock Exchange for an immediate trading halt on Monday, saying it would make a material announcement related to a news article published over the weekend.
The trading halt is set to expire at the start of trading later this morning.
