Remembrance Day

by | Nov 11, 2025 | Arts & Culture, Community | 0 comments

Today is Remembrance Day – one of the most important days on our commemorative calendar and is a day when all Australians acknowledge those who died or suffered while serving in wars, conflicts and peace operations.

The day is also the anniversary of the Armistice of 1918 that ended fighting in World War I although the war didn’t officially end until 28 June 1919 with the Treaty of Versailles.

Former Shadow Veterans Affairs Minister & New England MP Barnaby Joyce says in the First World War, 460,000 enlisted of a population of 5 million adding many people from this region went off to war in large numbers.

Mr Joyce says tragically 62 thousand were killed while a further 156,000 were wounded, gassed or taken prisoner.

He urged the community to stop whatever they’re doing at 11am and remember those ADF personnel who have been wounded – both physically and mentally – as well as the countless family and friends who have lost loved ones.
