Gwydir Shire Council has written to Inverell Shire Council asking it to consider forming a Regional and Rural Medical Service Alliance to act as a strong voice to lobby for improved regional and rural medical services.
In his letter, former Gwydir Shire Mayor Max Eastcott says Council has been subsidizing medical services with their local government area where it has now become an expectation from its community that local government to provide a range of medical services, such as G.Ps and other allied health services.
Mr Eastcott stated the intention of the Alliance is not to undermine the work undertaken by other representative bodies such as the Country Mayors Association or Local Government NSW but to develop a focused lobby group to deal with the issues.
Inverell Shire Council is expected to address the letter at Wednesday’s Council meeting.
