Police have urged motorists to drive safe this long weekend as Operation Labour Day 2024 officially kicks in across all roads in NSW.
The operation commenced at 12.01 this morning and will conclude at 11.59pm this Monday, targeting drink and drug driving, fatigue, mobile phone use, speeding and seat belt and helmet offences, with double demerits in place for the duration of the operation.
Drivers that are caught exceeding the speed limit by more than 10 km/h during the double demerit period will receive a $316 fine and 6 points or 8 points for Learner and Provisional licence holders and $542 and 8 points if caught exceeding the limit by 20 km/h, while drivers caught using a mobile phone while driving will cop a $410 fine and 10 demerit points.
Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Acting Assistant Commissioner David Driver says police will be out in force across the state to encourage compliance with the road rules adding the risk of a fine or the loss of demerit points should deter people from breaking the law, however, not putting the lives of others at risk should be the incentive to use our roads safely.
