A site long celebrated by locals and visitors alike has now been formally recognised by the NSW Government, with the Australian Standing Stones officially approved and gazetted by the Geographical Names Board of NSW.
The milestone marks a major step in acknowledging the cultural and historical significance of the monument, which stands proudly in Glen Innes’ Centennial Parklands. The name has now been published in the NSW Government Gazette, giving the site formal geographic status in official records and mapping systems.
This exciting development comes after years of advocacy by Glen Innes Severn Council and the Australian Standing Stones Management Board (ASSMB), working together to preserve and celebrate the unique site.
The Australian Standing Stones are a nationally significant cultural landmark and the spiritual heart of Celtic heritage in the Glen Innes Highlands.
Acting Mayor Carol Sparks welcomed the news, saying, “The Australian Standing Stones are a treasured symbol of Glen Innes and the Celtic diaspora in Australia. This formal recognition strengthens our ability to preserve their legacy and share the story behind them more widely.”
The monument attracts thousands of visitors each year and serves as the focal point of the annual Australian Celtic Festival – one of the region’s most celebrated events.
“The gazettal gives the site stronger visibility in planning documents, maps and tourism material, supporting its long-term preservation and role in regional development,” Cr Sparks added.
The ASSMB has welcomed the announcement and endorsed Council’s efforts to promote the naming. The Board encourages the community to continue celebrating and supporting the landmark.
