The National Farmers Federation has responded to the coalition’s announcement on nuclear and Australia’s Energy Future, with the governing body warning policymakers on the potential impacts of the people and the land.
NFF Acting CEO Charlie Thomas says though the federation’s position remains that Australia’s national energy policies must deliver affordable, reliable and increasingly lower emissions energy for all Australians, he believes all energy options must be laid out on the table.
Mr Thomas says while the NFF supports a net zero target set by the coalition by the year 2050, there is no way Agriculture be made the sacrificial lamb in the pathway to net zero and will hold the government and any future government to its commitment not to impose targets on farmers directly.
The NFF says national energy policy and emissions reduction must be a shared responsibility and agriculture will play its part, but that part must be fair and not compromise productivity, profitability or food security.
