Northern Tablelands MP Brendan Moylan is calling on the federal government to drop the fuel excise to assist the current cost of living crisis.
Speaking on STA FM this week, Mr Moylan says with Diesel prices rising over $3 per litre and unleaded petrol costing between $2.50 to $2.65 per litre this week in Inverell, 53 cents is being taken in fuel excise.
Mr Moylan also highlighted the government was also cashing in on the increased GST on fuel sales, suggesting that any additional revenue from these sales should be put immediately into cost-of-living measures.
He says dropping the fuel excise is just one option the government should be considering adding any measures should prioritise fuel for regional areas.
