A Glen Innes man has been sentenced to a 15-month intensive correction order following the death of an 84-year-old pensioner in Glen Innes in 2023

The Northern Daily Leader reports 65-year-old Douglas Gordon Budden pleaded guilty to negligent driving occasioning death at Armidale Local Court this week in relation to accident that took place in Grey Street in February 2023.

Rodrick Cook, driving his mobility scooter, was hit by Budden’s Mazda in a shared zone, where motorists must give way to pedestrians and observe a 10km/h speed limit.

Police claimed Budden was driving in excess of 10 km/h without changing his speed or manner of driving when he clipped the scooter, forcing it to flip and eject Mr Cook who ended up colliding with a metal bollard and trapping him between the bollard and the scooter.

Mr Cook was discharged and transferred back to Glen Innes Hospital later in February but died on March 4th.

Mr Budden’s sentence is due to expire in October next year and was also disqualified from driving for three months from July 14.
