New England MP Barnaby Joyce says he’s concerned that freedom of speech is under threat in Australia following the passage of new hate laws in parliament on Tuesday.
Mr Joyce was one of seven lower house members to vote against the anti-hate laws after the government secured support from the Liberals
Speaking on STA FM yesterday, One Nation’s high profile recruit says the government should have introduced a bill on antisemitism targeting people, in particular Islamic fundamentalists, who want to murder people of the Jewish faith but instead have introduced legislation that is far more broad- reaching.
Mr Joyce says this could be the start of censorship across the country, controlling what people can and cannot say in a public forum adding severe penalties can be enforced if perceived statements of hate are made.
