New England MP Barnaby Joyce has called on the Federal Government for further funding to be reinstated for unmarked graves around the country.
The Shadow Veterans Affairs Minister says Labor promised $3.7 million dollars during the 2022 Federal Election campaign to match the Coalitions commitments to establish an on-going grant program to mark private graves of WWI veterans who died after the war.
Speaking on STA FM this morning, Mr Joyce estimates there are 12,000 unmarked graves around the country, and it is encumbered upon us to find them and give them the dignity they deserve as they offered their life for our nation.
Mr Joyce highlighted Australians say Lest we Forget but how can we remember if the grave has no recognition of their service, in fact no recognition of even their name; just bare soil.
He says there needs to be recognitions for our past diggers.
