September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness and funds
for research into paediatric cancer.
This September, Children’s Cancer Institute is once again shining a light on the Australian families
that face the devastating news that their child has cancer.
Tragically, three lives are lost every week to this disease, cutting short the potential of young lives
before they even have the chance to make their mark. For those who do survive, 70% endure
lifelong effects from harsh treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.
Despite advancements in medical science, much work remains to develop safer, more effective
treatments and ultimately find a cure.
Anne Johnston, Director of Marketing and Fundraising at Children’s Cancer Institute, underscores
the urgency: “Childhood cancer has an enormous impact within the global and local communities. In
Australia alone, more than 1000 children and adolescents are diagnosed with cancer every single
year.
“At Children’s Cancer Institute, we believe a life should be long. That every child should get the
chance to grow up and grow old. To plan exciting futures, chase their dreams, and live a life that is
full of possibilities.”
“Thanks to research, survival rates for childhood cancer have grown from almost every child dying in
the 1960’s to today, over 80% of children surviving. But we believe we can and we will cure every
child.
This September, the Institute — the only independent medical research institute in Australia solely
dedicated to curing childhood cancer — is calling on all Australians to support its mission. For 40
years, the Institute has been at the forefront of research into the causes, prevention, and cure of
childhood cancer, striving to make a meaningful difference in the lives of affected children and their
families.
Children’s Cancer Institute invites the public to join their efforts this Childhood Cancer Awareness
Month by:
- Raising Awareness: Highlighting the impact of childhood cancer on families and
communities. - Making a donation: Supporting vital research to uncover the causes, prevention strategies,
and cures for paediatric cancer.
Children’s Cancer Institute encourages all Australians to get involved and do their part to drive
progress towards a future where no child has to suffer from cancer.
Together, we can work towards a world where every child can grow up, chase their dreams, and live
a life full of possibilities.
