Police have commenced an investigation after a string of break and enters and a kidnapping in the state’s northeast overnight.
Today (Monday 7 September 2026), officers attached to Oxley Police District commenced an investigation following reports a BMW sedan was stolen from a home on Kalinda Place, Hillvue, between 12am and 2.10am.
On arrival, police found the home had been ransacked.
About 2.20am, the stolen sedan attended at a petrol station on Jewry Street, Taminda, where an occupant filled up with fuel before leaving without paying.
About 3.40am, police received reports of the same vehicle a motel on Gunnedah Road, Westdale, where a group of people exited the vehicle and kicked open a motel room door.
Members of the group demanded keys and cash from the occupant – a man in his 30s – before stealing keys to a Mazda station wagon, a mobile phone and a backpack containing a wallet, laptop, and other personal items.
The group then kicked open a second motel room door before demanding keys and cash from the occupant – a man in his 50s – and fleeing with keys to a Toyota SUV and a wallet.
The group then drove off in both the station wagon and SUV.
No injuries were reported.
About 4.35am, the same group – including one person armed with a machete – demanded money from a man in his 50s, who was sitting in a vehicle in a carpark on Armidale Road, East Tamworth.
Police were told the man was ordered by the group to enter the backseat of another vehicle – believed to be stolen – before he was driven to a bank on Peel Street, where the group demanded he withdraw money.
Police responded, however, the group was unable to be located.
The man was located uninjured.
As police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incidents, officers are urging anyone who may have CCTV/mobile phone or dashcam footage, or who has witnessed any suspicious activity in the area today, to come forward.
