The Inverell Shire Council is proud to celebrate Josh Cathie, Chairperson of the Inverell Shire Youth Advisory Council (IYAC), who was awarded the prestigious Minister’s Award for Excellence in Student Achievement at a ceremony held at Sydney Town Hall on Monday night.

Josh received this honour not only for his exceptional academic performance, but also for his extensive involvement in extracurricular and community activities.

His leadership, initiative, and dedication have made him a standout figure in the Inverell Shire and beyond.

Josh has been a vital member of IYAC for the past three years, joining of his own initiative in Year 10.

In 2024, he was unanimously elected Chairperson by his peers, a role he embraced with enthusiasm. Under his leadership, IYAC has remained an active and influential voice for the youth of Inverell Shire, continuing to engage with local issues and deliver a range of youth focussed events. IYAC is currently developing the Inverell Shire Youth Strategy and Action Plan.

Beyond his work with IYAC, Josh is a committed member of Inverell Toastmasters and has excelled in public speaking competitions, honing communication skills that have enabled him to collaborate effectively in the community and organise a number of events.

His fundraising efforts include support for the Belinda McGowan Foundation, Laps for Life, and Mullets for Mental Health. All causes close to his heart and reflective of his compassionate nature.

Josh also serves as a Corporal in the Australian Air Force Cadets, where he plays a key role in military ceremonies and leadership field camps, demonstrating discipline, responsibility, and a strong sense of service.

Academically, Josh has distinguished himself in earning Outstanding Achievement Awards in Community and Family Studies, Modern History, Extension History, PDHPE, English Advanced, and Mathematics. His academic excellence was further recognised with the Principal’s Award for Academic Excellence, a testament to his commitment to study.

Earlier this year, Josh was also named Inverell Young Citizen of the Year at the 2025 Australia Day Ceremony, an accolade that reflects both his personal character and his contributions to the community.

Inverell Shire Mayor, Cr Kate Dight stated “Josh is an extraordinary young leader whose achievements speak volumes about his integrity, drive, and generosity. He is a role model for youth in our region and a shining example of what can be accomplished through hard work and dedication.”

Mayor Dight also said “Josh’s future is undoubtedly bright, and we look forward to seeing his continued success as he embarks on the next chapter of his journey at university and beyond.”
