Inverell Shire Mayor Kate Dight will confirm Council’s in principle support for the Murray Darling Association’s urgent call for the Federal Government to fund and implement the National Carp Control Plan and its recommendations.
Mayor Dight will use her Mayoral Minute at this morning’s Council meeting to highlight the concerns by Councils and Local Government Areas across the Basin regarding European Carp and water quality.
European Carp contribute to environmental degradation in the Basin and impact native fish species and through their feeding habits, Carp impact aquatic plant, native fish eggs, small fish, and zooplankton populations in our waterways.
The recommendation includes the biological control of carp numbers by using the herpes virus, which could reduce numbers by 40-60%.
