Inverell Shire Council Endorses New Draft Policies

by | Apr 30, 2026 | Local Government, Media Release

Inverell Shire Council has endorsed three new draft policies for public exhibition as part of its ongoing commitment to transparent, fair and contemporary financial management practices.

The draft Debt Recovery Policy, Financial Hardship Policy, and Pensioner Rebate Concession Policy have been developed following a comprehensive review of Council’s existing revenue-related policies and internal procedures.

The review identified that several older policies lacked sufficient clarity and no longer reflected best practice or current community needs.
The new policies provide a clearer, more robust framework for managing rates, charges and financial support.

The proposed policies separate debt recovery processes from hardship assistance, ensuring each area is addressed with appropriate detail while still operating in a coordinated and consistent manner.

The policies have been developed in line with the Office of Local Government’s Debt Management and Hardship Guidelines, which all NSW councils are encouraged to adopt.

Mayor Cr Kate Dight said the updated policy framework strengthens Council’s ability to support the community while maintaining responsible financial management.

“These policies strike the right balance between ensuring Council can effectively manage rates and charges, while also providing fair, compassionate support for residents experiencing genuine financial hardship. Clear, modern policies help us serve our community with consistency, transparency and care.”

The draft policies are now on public exhibition, with a further report to be presented to Council following the exhibition period.
